Italy’s Parliament Holds First Session

The new Italian parliament, which opens the 17th Legislature, has the task of electing the President of the House of Parliament and of the Senate, before giving way to a new government. Pier Luigi Bersani, leader of the Democratic Party, asked his senators and representatives to vote blank votes with the intent to continue to work on an agreement with the Five Stars Movement (M5S) who instead said that it will vote only for its candidates for the presidency of House of Parliament and the Senate.
